Kingdom supporting local homeless shelter

imageKingdom is pleased to be supporting a local homeless shelter – the Atherton & Leigh Shelter for HoPe (HOmeless PEople), a local emergency night time shelter for homeless people.

They provide a hot meal, a safe, secure, warm and friendly environment, a bed for the night, a bit of breakfast and access to shower facilities to homeless people that are referred to them by local professional care and homeless agencies. This is provided at no cost to either the user of the referring agency. Instead, the costs are met by donations and grants. They are not a housing outcome, but instead their provision is to meet the emergency need until their guests can be guided into a longer term housing provision.

Kingdom has been supporting the work of this local charity by collecting items for the Atherton & Leigh Shelter for HoPe at their National Support Centre in Newton-le-Willows throughout January. They set up a collection point in the HR department where colleagues were able to donate items.

These items included:

  • Gloves
  • Hats
  • New underwear (mens and womens)
  • Towels
  • Socks
  • Thermals

This is following the success of Kingdom’s recent food bank collection, when Kingdom set up a collection point during December for any items that colleagues wished to donate to the local Atherton and Leigh Foodbank.

The Atherton & Leigh Shelter for HoPe was set up in the autumn of 2014 by Ian and Warren. They were concerned that they were seeing an increase in the number of people that was street homeless, and were accessing places like the Atherton and Leigh Foodbank. They met Martin, who was presenting the work of Manchester City Mission and the Narrowgate night shelter project at a prayer breakfast, and the three of them looked at running a pilot emergency accommodation service for Wigan, that would be centred on Atherton and Leigh.

This initially ran for four months in 2015 and four months in 2016. They now have a new venue for 2017 with support from Wigan Council, and are actively looking at extending their provision to run year-round emergency homeless accommodation.
