Kingdom to help keep Cheshire East clean

Cheshire EastAnother council has turned to Kingdom to help them to make their borough cleaner, safer and greener.

Kingdom’s Environmental Protection Division started work in Cheshire East in the first week of October. The team has been brought in on a 12 month contract by Cheshire East Council to tackle fly-tipping as well as littering and dog fouling in public places.

The officers will initially be focusing their attention on Crewe. However, they will be responsive to situations as they develop across the borough. Other key towns in Cheshire East include Macclesfield, Nantwich, Knutsford, Sandbach, Congleton, Alderley Edge and Wilmslow. Anyone who sees evidence of fly-tipping can report it to the council on 0300 123 5021.

Kingdom’s officers will be issuing fixed penalty notices (FPNs) of £80 to anyone caught dropping litter and not disposing of it correctly, and to anyone not cleaning up after their dog has fouled. They will be handing £400 fines to people caught fly-tipping. The team got off to a fantastic start, handing out 232 (FPNs) in the first week alone, greatly exceeding what was hoped for and expected of from them.

Cheshire East Council staff will meanwhile continue to vary out engagement work which focuses on the longer-term objective of achieving the three ‘e’s – engage, educate and enforce.

Commenting on Kingdom’s new role, Councillor Paul Bates, the cabinet member for communities and health on Cheshire East Council, said: "We've made our position clear on this matter. Enough is enough. The recruitment of these officers is a clear sign of how seriously we take this issue.

"We are an enforcing council but we also have a duty to ensure that we do everything we can to help people get access to the information which will stop them from fly-tipping in the future. Looking at the bigger picture, this really is as much about education as it is enforcement."

Kingdom’s Environmental Protection Division is led by experts with an ex-police and military background. The specialist teams deliver 270,000+ Environmental Protection hours per annum on behalf of local authorities across the country.
