A team of six which included Kingdom security officer Irek Poniewozik (third from the left in the photo) and Kingdom Business Manager Fred Lambrechts (furthest on the right), successfully completed the Three Peaks Challenge on the 3rd and 4th of September. Fred has been Kingdom’s Corporate Business Manager in Central London for six years and Irek has been a core member of the security and concierge team at Kingdom’s client Weil (Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP) since April 2013.
Kingdom has had a successful working relationship with Weil since 1998 and provides them with security and concierge services. Weil is among the world’s most prestigious international law firms, with approximately 1,100 lawyers in offices on three continents around the world. They advise clients on their most complex corporate, litigation, regulatory, restructuring and tax challenges.
The Three Peaks Challenge is to conquer the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in just a single weekend (within 24 hours). It is considered to be one of the ultimate tests of physical endurance, mental stamina and effective teamwork. Explaining why they were taking part in this challenge, the team wrote the following on their JustGiving page:
“We are a bunch of people exploring the world and looking for new challenges. Last year we cycled from London to Amsterdam and from London to Paris. We run half/ full marathons and ultra marathons over the mountains.
We have now decided to take part in the three peaks challenge in September. Although The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland, often within 24 hours, to make this event a little bit more challenging our target is to do it within 20 hours.
We are raising money on behalf of The Sick Children's Trust. They provide free, high-quality ‘Home from Home’ accommodation as well as emotional and practical support, to families with sick children in hospital in the UK. We believe keeping families together significantly improves the recovery of seriously ill children.
We would really appreciate any donations you could make to this fantastic cause.”
The team started Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock and finished just before 11 o’clock on Sunday morning – being their 20 hour target with the team time being 19 hours and 40 minutes. They would have completed the challenge even quicker were it not for a minor issue that involved being slightly misdirected on Scaffel Pike at 2am costing them some valuable time!
Fred provided the team with transport and moral support for the duration of the challenge, driving over 1,500 miles in one weekend to ensure the team had the best possible opportunity to complete the challenge within the tight timeframe. He maintains that his support was the key to the success!
The times for each mountain were as follows:
- Ben Nevis 1345m (4413ft) conquered in 2 hours 50 minutes
- Scafell Pike 978m (3209ft) conquered in 5 hours
- Snowdon 1085m (3560ft) conquered in 1 hour 15 minutes
The team’s target was to raise £200 in aid of The Sick Children’s Trust – but the team has absolutely smashed that target, raising £1,060 at the time of writing, or 530% of their original target, with more money still coming in. The team were helped to reach this incredible amount with significant donations from both Weil and Kingdom. Donations are still welcome via the team’s JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/teams/challenge2016
Each of those completing the challenge received a medal to mark their achievement (see below) although the driver was just thanked by those completing the challenge!
Well done Irek and Fred – we’re all incredibly proud of you and your support for such a worthwhile charity.
