Kingdom was very pleased to support a major client’s fundraising event recently. The Drax Charity Golf Day took place on Thursday 15th September 2016 and was hosted by Drax Power Station. Based in Selby, North Yorkshire, Drax is the UK’s largest power station, typically providing some 7-8% of the UK’s electricity. As well as being an important strategic asset nationally, Drax Power Station is also vital to the local economy, with some 830 people working there.
Kingdom has been providing a comprehensive high risk security service to Drax Power Station since February 2011 and recently won a new five year contract (with an option for an extra two years) to continue to do so. Their security package includes guarding service, CCTV suite and operators, and mobile team. Kingdom’s dedicated energy and utilities team has extensive experience and an in-depth understanding of both the energy and utilities sector and of protecting critical national assets.
The tenth annual Drax Charity Golf Day took place at the Fulford Golf Club in York, York’s Championship Course. There were 25 teams of four at the event, with each team led by a Drax host. Kingdom’s Finance Director Nigel Whittle and Business Analytics Manager Neil Balmer joined a team hosted by Martin Sloan, Group Head of Security at Drax Power Limited. In order to take part, individuals were asked to make a donation of £60 to the company’s chosen charity, Selby Hands of Hope. This is a local charity, now in its seventh year, which is run by local people for local people. The charity supports individuals, community groups and organisations in the local area. Kingdom was also very pleased to sponsor a hole at the event, which included a contribution to prizes.
The Drax Charity Golf Day has gone from strength to strength since it was first introduced, gaining in popularity and providing increasing support for their nominated charities. Through the generosity of their suppliers and contractors to date the event has raised over £100,000.
The event was a fun day of golf for a very worthwhile cause, and luckily the weather as well as the course was fantastic. The main competition was played over 18 holes in a 4-ball team Stableford (best two scores) format off three-quarters handicap, with team prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. There was also a yellow ball competition within the team competition and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for the best individual scores for those who did not win a team prize.
The team scored 83 points and were fifth overall. However, it was very close, as the winners scored 87, and the second and third placed teams both scored 86, with second have 47 points on the back nine. The team had 35 going out and 48 coming back so three points more would have made them second, and four more points would have made them the winners! Martin Sloan had the highest personal score within the team, scoring 35 points, and was only two points behind the overall winner who had 37 points.
In addition, they also held a nearest the pin, beat the pro and longest drive contests, sponsored by their suppliers with prizes for the winners. Neil played extremely well, winning the longest drive on one hole, and Nigel was one of nine participants to beat the pro on nearest the pin on a par 3 and also won longest drive on a different hole to Neil. Three separate £10 penalties were charged on players who missed the green on the easiest Par 3, missed the fairway and lost the yellow ball. The event was followed by a drinks reception in the Clubhouse Bar and then a presentation and 3-course meal in the Clubhouse Dining Room.
