It is increasingly popular in offices and other workplaces across the country for employees to take part in “Fat Friday”. This is where everyone in the workplace has something unhealthy – such as bacon rolls for brunch or fish and chips or burgers for lunch – as a reward for getting to the end of another long week at work.
Without meaning to sound like kill joys, whilst there is nothing wrong with the occasional treat, it is important to eat everything in moderation, and with one in four British adults now classed as “obese”, employers need to help and facilitate employees to lead a healthy, active lifestyle, rather than encourage the opposite.
That is why employees based at Kingdom’s Bristol office are now bucking the national trend, and rather than having a “Fat Friday” are taking part in “Fit Friday” instead.
Explaining why, Kingdom’s Midlands Business Manager Chris Burman-Day said: “As part of our regional drive to motivate and encourage our team members, over coming months we will be looking at innovative ways to promote health and encourage a healthy and physically active lifestyle to the wider regional team. Healthy living and physical fitness are great ways to improve lifestyle, productivity and mental health, and we have started locally.”
Chris regularly races in endurance and adventure races and has planned weekly group cross-training sessions. These are comprised of a circuit session incorporating free-weight, plyometrics and sprints, providing variable HIIT sessions for all abilities, and which will change each week. The first one was held on Friday 22nd July in the field behind the car park of Kingdom’s Bristol office, with a second session held on Friday 29th July. Although this has so far only been rolled out to Kingdom team members at the Bristol office, Chris is intending to roll this out regionally over the coming months. Explaining his plans, Chris said:
“Over coming months, staff from regional sites will be invited to participate in the weekly workout and will also start to receive regular email briefing documents on subjects surrounding healthy eating and exercise and will have the opportunity to join in a regional challenge around weekly / monthly step-counts or similar. Where others have a ‘Fat Friday’, we’ll be promoting a ‘Fit Friday!’”
